W-Well: Automated Logistics Center for a Corrugated Board Production Facility

The W-Well plant in Bad Hall (Upper Austria), built in 2024, is one of the most modern corrugated board production facilities of its kind. It relies on state-of-the-art machinery, intelligent energy concepts and short transport routes – with a strong focus on efficiency and sustainability.

Task

For the new corrugated board plant, an innovative, sustainable and highly efficient intralogistics solution was required.
The general contractor SITLog commissioned Schwingshandl to supply and integrate customized intralogistics systems. The decisive factor was the long-standing and successful cooperation on previous projects for other companies within the Starke-Group.

The dimensions of the load carriers and the special requirements for material flow posed particular challenges. To fully meet the customer’s needs, Schwingshandl developed several machines and modules from scratch, specifically tailored to the project.

Implementation

Schwingshandl supplied and integrated the following key systems for W-Well:

  • Load carriers with lengths and widths ranging from 140 to 220 cm
  • Special transfer cars with floor-embedded rails
  • Lifts for connecting different floor levels
  • Special manual workstations
  • Floor-embedded modular conveyors for pallet infeed and outfeed
  • Intrinsically safe technology in the production area for maximum protection and operational safety

A decisive success factor was strict adherence to the project timeline. Even during the construction phase, the rails for the transfer cars were installed directly on the raw concrete floor and then embedded in screed – requiring precise coordination between construction, mechanical engineering and logistics planning.

W-Well has clear and specific requirements for its products and processes. Through close, cooperative partnership, these were incorporated into the planning phase at an early stage, allowing new solutions to be developed in a targeted way and implemented reliably and on schedule.

Josef Adam, Managing Director, SITLog:
“SITLog was awarded the contract as general contractor for the logistics scope of W-Well’s new corrugated board production facility. Due to our successful cooperation on numerous projects and the special requirements that could not be covered by standard solutions, Schwingshandl was once again chosen as our partner for this project.
Open communication, mutual respect, a high level of quality and trust in professional solution-finding for non-standard requirements formed the basis for our shared success. We would like to thank them for the excellent cooperation, value the partnership between our companies and look forward to further joint projects.”

Gerald Hubmer, Project Manager Schwingshandl:
“Together with SITLog as the general contractor, Schwingshandl as the mechanical supplier has already successfully implemented several projects for the Starke-Group to their full satisfaction. We are therefore especially pleased that W-Well once again placed its trust in Schwingshandl for this exciting and intralogistically demanding project. I would particularly like to highlight the excellent cooperation between the project teams of W-Well, SITLog and Schwingshandl, which made it possible to complete this project to the full satisfaction of everyone involved.”
