Modernisation of conveyor technology and storage pre-zone for airport logistics

Initial situation & task

A rack-based baggage storage system improves capacity, accuracy and safety in baggage handling operations at airports of any size. As a dynamic early baggage storage (EBS) system, it enables fast and efficient batch building of baggage items.

Once a sufficient number of bags for a batch is available, the baggage is retrieved from the storage system and sorted to buffer lines, where it can be quickly loaded into unit load devices (ULDs) or baggage carts, for example using a baggage manipulator. The objective of the project was to modernize the conveyor technology and pre-storage area while providing a compact, high-performance and globally deployable solution.

Realisation

Schwingshandl developed a particularly compact storage and retrieval machine that has been successfully implemented in numerous airport projects worldwide.

At the heart of the solution is an innovative load handling device that enables extremely short transfer times between the rack and the pre-storage area, ensuring high throughput rates.

The storage and retrieval machine, including the load handling device and control cabinet, was designed as a plug-and-play module that can be packed and shipped in a standard container. This significantly reduces installation and commissioning times on site.

Scope of delivery

  • Compact storage and retrieval machine with dual friction wheel drive concept
  • Innovative load handling device for fast transfers
  • Simplified aisle equipment

Added value

  • High dynamic performance and short access times
  • High system availability
  • Minimal installation and commissioning effort
  • Globally deployable plug-and-play solution for airports
