Stacker crane with pin tipper for the tobacco industry

Initial situation & task

Schwingshandl developed a special storage and retrieval machine with a highly complex load handling device (“pin tipper”) for a tobacco producer.

In the tobacco industry, different types of tobacco are stored in container-like pins that are stacked along the storage aisle. For downstream production steps, these pins have to be removed, transported and emptied in a targeted manner.

The special challenge lay in the load handling equipment: the pins had to be clamped, unstacked and tilted by approx. 160° – without tobacco dust escaping during the movement.

Realisation

Schwingshandl has developed a storage and retrieval machine with a special load handling device that safely handles the entire process. The pin is clamped, lifted and tilted in a controlled manner.
To prevent dust from escaping, a pneumatically opening lid was integrated into the load handling device, which is controlled during the tilting process.

Components used

  • Stacker crane with special load handling device (pin tipper)
  • Electrical installation and control

Added value

  • Safe handling of dust-intensive materials
  • Precise tilting process with high process reliability
  • Customised solution for complex production processes
